![]() This estimate is 2–3-fold higher than the risk of thrombosis observed in the general population, thus all PV patients can indeed be considered at high thrombotic risk when compared to healthy persons. Currently, patients are defined to be at low risk by age 60 and/with prior thrombosis, still exhibit an annual rate of major thrombotic episodes of 2%. The first step in approaching an individual patient with PV is to identify the potential risk to develop major thrombotic or hemorrhagic complications.
